Els Mansell scored a hat-trick as Clifton made an eye-catching start to the new England Hockey League Women’s Premier Division season by beating defending champions Leicester 5-1 in Bristol.
Mansell took just two minutes to get off the mark and put Clifton 2-0 ahead at half-time with a 14th minute strike at Coombe Dingle.

Newly promoted University of Exeter begin their England Hockey League Men’s Premier Division campaign with a huge home fixture, against Reading today (University Sports Park, 12.30).
Reading – who finished fourth in the EHL last term – could possibly call upon a handful of internationals, some of whom helped England claim bronze in the recent EuroHockey championships, including Somerset star Richard Mantell.

The 2011-2012 England Hockey League starts today with the top match in the region at Coombe Dingle, Bristol where Fleur Horner’s Clifton Ladies take on reigning champions Leicester in the Women’s Premier Division (1300).
Last season’s Women’s Conference West runners-up Isca University start the new season at home to Southampton side Trojans at the water-based University Sports Park (1230).

Plymouth Albion have been boosted by the news that influential captain Sean-Michael Stephen has been passed fit to face Rotherham tonight at Brickfields (1945).
Stephen missed last week's 34-23 defeat at London Welsh due to a hip injury.

Duchy Hockey Club Ladies were beaten 11-0 in their first competitive match by Cornwall Cup holders Falmouth in the opening first round tie at Pool Academy.
Falmouth's first team are the most successful ladies club side in Cornwall and play in West Clubs Womens League Premier 2.
