RUGBY Baxter delight with Chiefs scorching start

Exeter Chiefs winger Matt Jess, courtesy Exeter ChiefsExeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter praised his red hot squad following the 43-6 opening Premiership win over Sale Sharks at sweltering Sandy Park.

Chiefs finished fifth in the top flight last season and some pundits are already assuming they will struggle to do as well in their third term, with the added diversion of European Heineken Cup commitments.

However Baxter was delighted with the Devon club’s scorching six-try domestic start under the September sun.

Baxter said: “We had a nice finish to last season, when we were comfortable and got after games. We have kind of taken off in the same manner which is pleasing.

“To collect five points on the opening day and not concede a try in the process means a lot of things must have gone right for us out there.

“I don't mind saying points on the board is a big relief.

“You spend a lot of time preparing for these games and a lot of worrying goes on, but in the end we were determined to play and come out here and enjoy ourselves."

Argentine fly half Ignacio Mieres, Aly Muldowney, Matt Jess 2, England forward Tom Johnson and Chris Budgen touched down for Exeter, who now target a first Premiership win at Northampton next Sunday.
