WOMEN'S HOCKEY: CLIFTON START AT SLOUGH

The region’s top women’s hockey club Clifton Ladies begin their 2012-2013 Investec Premier Division campaign at Slough on Saturday 15 September.

After avoiding relegation in the play-off tournament, Slough face a tough start against Fleur Horner's Bristol blues, who qualified for the end of season Investec Women’s Championship tournament after finishing fourth in the regular season.

Clifton also boast Dutch ace Els Mansell, who scored 12 goals for Clifton in the top flight last term, and GB Olympic midfielder Georgie Twigg.

2012 Women’s Conference West champions Buckingham begin their title defence at Bristol-based Firebrands, who finished fifth last season.

Buckingham’s closest challengers were Swansea, who finished five points adrift. The Welsh wizards travel to Somerset on the opening day to take on newly promoted Taunton Vale, last term’s runaway West Clubs Women’s League champions.

Gloucester City enjoyed a top four spot last season and will seek to continue that form as they start at Staines, who finished eighth in the 10-team division.

With long time national league stalwarts Exe relegated, Isca University represent Exeter and Devon hopes in the EHL next term. University of Exeter based Isca begin their 2013 title bid at home to Southampton side Trojans, who finished seventh last season. Isca – fired by 18-goal university student Claire Thomas and 10-goal Amy Sheehan – were third.
