English County finalists Somerset held hosts Dorset to a draw to finally get off the mark in the matchplay rounds at Parkstone.

Following back to back defeats Somerset halved the morning singles 4-4 and the afternoon foursomes to put a brake on table-topping Dorset's winning start.

Remarkably Dorset have turned the tables upside down after finishing without a win - or even half a point - in the heat at Cumberwell Park last summer when scorching Somerset won all five matchplay matches.

Defending champions Somerset remain bottom of the table after three of the five rounds and unable to retain the Matchplay Shield.

The reds have opened the door for 2018 runners-up Gloucestershire and resurgent Devon to stake a claim for the shield.

Devon - who face Dorset today - rallied from 4.5-3.5 down following the morning singles to win all four foursomes games against Wiltshire to move up to move up to third in the table by recording their second win of the week.

Gary Ward's Gloucesterhire - who play border rivals Wiltshire today - are hot on Dorset's heels following an emphatic victory over Ian Veale's Cornwall.

Gloucesterhire won a magnificent seven singles - 32 under par - to race 7-0 up against the black and golds before ever-reliable Cornish ace Rob MacGregor (Tehidy Park) beat Andy Hale (Chipping Sodbury) in the final morning game out.

MacGregor won three and two again at anchor - with Perranporth's Conor Wilson - in the foursomes by which time Gloucestershire were home and proverbially if not literally dry against Cornwall as the showers swept in over the south coast.

Today Cornwall will seek to regain form - and pride - against a Somerset side with nothing to lose after Tuesday when they became the first county to secure a coveted spot at this year's English County Finals at Huddersfield, which tees off on September 27.
