FRIENDLY Cornwall outfox Royal Navy at Tehidy

2013 Channel League golf champions Cornwall signalled their intent by posting a 13-2 win over the Royal Navy in their annual pre-season friendly at Tehidy Park, Camborne.

China Fleet ace Tom Fox was on top form for Cornwall, combining with Bude and North Cornwall’s Adam Curtis to win in the foursomes and even more handsomely in the afternoon singles as the host county built on a mid-match 4-1 lead.

Fox led the singles charge with a big seven and six top-of-the-order win while Launceston’s Richard Jasper finished eight and seven up in his middle order match as Cornwall won at a canter.
New county captain Richard Simmons said: “The result was never in doubt. It was a good run-out all the same with some great early-season golf on a course that has suffered over the last few months but turned out in terrific condition – and will be quite stunning come county week in May.
"I named a strong side because I wanted to get as many of the squad together as possible before our opening Channel League match of the season against Gwent at Perranporth on April 20.”
Cornish attention now focuses on the eagerly-anticipated match against Gwent when Cornwall begin their Channel League defence.
Simmons’ selection next month will be further boosted by the availability of in-form St Enodoc amateur ace Joe Cruse and the 2013/14 Cornwall Winter Golf Series champion Josh Greenaway of Bowood Park.
