IVYBRIDGE TOWN Stewart excited by testing pre-season

Ivys 600x600IVYBRIDGE Town have lined up a series of interesting pre-season friendlies next month in preparation for the new season in the East Division of the South West Peninsula League which is scheduled to start on Saturday, August 6.

The fixtures include matches against Western League Premier clubs Millbrook, Saltash United and Torpoint Athletic in addition to the annual clashes with Wendron from the West Division of the SW Peninsula League for the Leon Sargent Challenge Cup.

Ivybridge manager Darren Stewart says: “I am really pleased with the programme we have lined up. It will provide a good mixture of testing matches and July will be a busy month as we also have a number of scheduled training sessions.”

The friendlies start with a visit to Millbrook on Tuesday July 5 (1945) and will be followed by the journey down to Wendron on Saturday July 9 (1500). Then comes another trip across the Tamar to Saltash on Thursday July 14 (1930).

The first home match will see Wendron play at Erme Valley on Saturday July 16 (1500) in the decider of the Leon Sargent Cup with the trophy being decided on aggregate over the two legs.

Last season’s East Division Champions Torpoint will be attractive visitors to Ivybridge on Thursday July 21 (1930) while Ivybridge travel to St Blazey on Monday July 25 (1945).

The pre-season programme is rounded off with a home match against East Allington from the South Devon League on Wednesday July 27 (1930) while Ivybridge face a fixture against their own reserve side at Erme Valley on Monday August 1 (1930).

Stewart says: “We will be playing against some sides at our own level and will also test ourselves against players from a higher standard with three matches against teams from the Western League.”

The Ivybridge boss is particularly looking forward to the clashes against Wendron, adding: “Those games will have a competitive element with a trophy at stake. Both clubs have family connections and it is good to visit Wendron where they have fantastic facilities.”
