TOUCHLINE TUESDAY Only 4 non-league games beat rain

The storms haven’t even started and yet tonight’s touchline Tuesday regional non-League football fixtures list was decimated by torrential downpours.

Of a possible 24 south west non-league fixtures only four survived the pre-storm wet and windy weather… which doesn’t bode well for weekend football fans.

What will be will be.

Western League One side Cheddar and Yeovil Town - 2-0 winners - made a wise pitch switch to Huish Park yesterday to ensure their Somerset Premier Cup went ahead tonight.

Especially as the Welton Rovers versus Bath City and Odd Down vs Wells City county cup ties have been washed off. The Odd Down Wells tie has been hastily rescheduled for Tuesday March 1.

Elsewhere FA Vase quarter finalists Hamworthy beat Bournemouth 1-0 at the all-weather County Ground.

Just up the road Weymouth beat Eastleigh 1-0 in the National League while the only Hellenic game on was Westbury United’s 3-2 Premier home win over Chipping Sodbury.

What makes that all the remarkable is that other games in Wiltshire have been rain-ruined.

Both Wiltshire Senior Cup semi-finals – Bemerton Heath Harlequins versus Marlborough at Royal Wootton Bassett Town and Downton versus Malmesbury Victoria at Melksham - fell foul of the weather, as did Amesbury Town’s home Wessex Premier game against Brockworth.

The Southern League Cup semi-final between Swindon Supermarine and their Southern Premier rivals Taunton Town will also have to be rescheduled, along with Truro City against Yate after rain-lashed Bolitho Park failed a midday pitch inspection.

Also in Devon, Buckland Athletic’s home Les Phillips Cup tie against Western League Premier rivals Saltash United also had an early call-off.

Looking ahead to the weekend Almondsbury’s home Western League One game against Bristol rivals Hengrove Athletic has been moved to the all-weather Gloucester FA pitch with a new 1215 kick off time.
