On-loan Fulham forward Matt Smith scored all four Robins goals as Bristol City won 4-2 at League One rivals Gillingham in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Southern Area final first leg.
The second leg is at Ashton Gate on Tuesday February 3 but more pressingly for Steve Cotterill’s City are important back-to-back home games against Notts County – on Saturday in League One – and Doncaster Rovers, in an FA Cup third round replay next Tuesday.
City drew 1-1 at Doncaster last Saturday but know the reward for next Tuesday’s winners is a cash-spinning home tie against Everton or West Ham United, who replay next Tuesday at Upton Park following last night’s 1-1 draw at Goodison.
25 year old Smith’s quartet last night took his tally to eight goals in four successive matches after scoring the 75th minute leveller at Doncaster, twice in a December 28 3-1 league win at Gillingham and the opener in Boxing Day’s 2-1 home league win over Yeovil Town.
• Talking of Robins, Adrian Foster's Frome Town were set to host Dorchester Town in the Southern League Premier Division tonight before the pitch failed a 1400 inspection.
