Toby Greatwood’s maiden century led Berkshire’s recovery on the second day of the NCCA Cluberly Championship Western Division One match against Oxfordshire at Falkland.

Berkshire were 132 for seven when captain Andy Rishton departed early in the day and in danger of conceding a sizeable first innings advantage until Greatwood played the innings of his career.

COUNTIES CRICKET Six on the spin for Sam Read

Last season’s Western Division champions Devon began their title defence with an eight wickets win over Herefordshire at Sidmouth thanks to six wickets from off-spinner Sam Read.

Herefordshire appeared well placed to bat out for a draw after Worcestershire Academy prospect Joe Porter made 81 on debut and George Rhodes (96) and Luke Powell (47) then added 89 for the fifth wicket.

COUNTIES CRICKET First day round-up

Oxfordshire’s Luke Hayes was unluckily denied a maiden century against Berkshire at the Falkland club in Newbury in Western Division One on the opening day of the National Counties Cricket Championship.

Hayes was left stranded on 99 not out when last man Oliver Armstrong was run out, unable to make his ground as the pair tried to scramble the single that would have taken his partner to three figures for the first time.

COUNTIES CRICKET Oxfordshire stumped by Sussex

Oxfordshire lost by nine wickets to Sussex in a T20 contest at Magdelen College School in the latest Showcase match between the 20 National Counties and 18 first-class counties.

Oxfordshire have a formal partnership with Sussex which has seen James Coles and Harrison Ward progress to the first-class ranks at Hove.

COUNTIES CRICKET Devon top group, win home advantage

Staffordshire, Norfolk, Berkshire and Devon will host the Super 12s stage of the National Counties T20 competition after finishing top of their respective groups.

Devon won Group Four after they bounced back from a 13 runs defeat in the opener against Cornwall at Werrington to dismiss their hosts for 87 in the second match and clinch a 76 runs victory.

COUNTIES CRICKET Cornwall pair showcase talent

Alfie MacDonald and Ben Ellis took the opportunity to showcase their talent before Cornwall went down to a 100 runs defeat against Somerset in a 50-overs Showcase match at Wadebridge.

Camborne batter MacDonald, Cornwall’s acting-captain, made an unbeaten century with Ellis keeping his company in an unbroken last wicket stand of 62 in 11 overs.
