COUNTIES CRICKET Somerset edge to Showcase win

Devon fell agonisingly short of beating a Somerset XI as they lost by two runs in a T20 contest at Exmouth in the first of this season’s Showcase fixtures between National Counties and the first-class counties.

Matt Whalley had taken Devon to the brink of victory by taking 14 from the first three balls of James Langridge’s penultimate over of the match which left them needing 10 off the last over to chase down a target of 175.

COUNTIES CRICKET Trophy holders Dorset knocked out

Dorset’s hopes of retaining the National Counties Trophy ended in a 76 runs defeat by Buckinghamshire.

Dorset needed to beat Buckinghamshire in their final Group Four match at Tring Park to have any hope of making the knockout stages and they were in with a shout when Dylan Church (78) and Joe Eckland (41) added 95 for the second wicket in pursuit of a target of 265.

National Counties Trophy holders Dorset slipped to a second defeat in 24 hours with Oxfordshire scrambling a one wicket win at St Edward’s School in Oxford.

Overnight rain meant the match was reduced to 40 overs-a-side and batters found runs hard to come by.

COUNTIES CRICKET Wales beat Trophy holders Dorset

National Counties Trophy holders Dorset suffered a setback in their title defence as they lost by 20 runs to Wales NC at Wimborne.

Former Nottinghamshire batter Sam King impressed on his Wales debut with a run-a-ball 91 in which he shared partnerships of 76 for the third wicket with Mathew Ryan and 118 for the fourth with his captain Brad Wadlan (71 not out).

COUNTIES CRICKET Holders Dorset off to a flier

Dorset made an impressive start to their National Counties Trophy defence by beating Cornwall by nine wickets in their opening Group Four match at Wimborne Cricket Club.

Having dismissed Cornwall for 186 with more than 10 overs of their innings unused, the holders then needed just 33.1 overs to chase down their target with Dylan Church (96 not out) and former Hampshire batter Joe Eckland (75 not out) sharing an unbroken second wicket partnership of 162.

COUNTIES CRICKET Haddow spins Bucks to national title

Conner Haddow spun Buckinghamshire to their second NCCA Championship title in three seasons with a record-breaking performance in the final at West Bromwich Dartmouth.

The slow left-armer took nine for 73 in the second innings, the best figures in an innings and in a match -16 for 143 – in a Championship final.
