BOWLS Ross-on-Wye's Jones new national champion

Bowls englandHerefordshire’s Shaun Jones won the Men’s National Two-Wood Singles Championship, supported by the Friends of English Bowling.

The Ross-on-Wye bowler defeated Kent’s Tom Bishop (Bromley BC) in yesterday's final at Victoria Park, Royal Leamington Spa.

Jones raced into a 13-0 lead after eight ends of the final, before Bishop won three of the next four ends to reduce the deficit to 14-4.

Left-handed Jones added a couple of singles to his tally, but a run of four consecutive ends for Bishop kept him in the contest and made the score 16-10 with three ends to play.

Jones then secured the single required to claim the title and deny Bishop becoming just the third player to win both the Two-Wood Singles and Singles Championship titles, following his success in the four-wood event in 2012.

Jones recorded a 17-11 victory over Lincolnshire’s Jonathan West in the morning’s quarter-final, before following that up with a single-shot victory over Dorset’s Ben Paulley in the last four.

Bishop reached the final with an 18-7 defeat of Warwickshire’s Mark Ireland and a 13-12 victory over Devon’s Lee Haywood in the semi-finals.
