TAMAR CUP 2014 Cornwall versus Devon tonight

The match will have special significance for former Launceston, Bath, Sale, Plymouth Albion and England hooker Graham Dawe, 54 as it is his first match as head coach of Cornwall ahead of next month’s Bill Beaumont Cup county championship campaign. Dawe will be assisted by Cornwall U20 coach Ian Morgan.

Second row forward Ben Hilton – one of 11 Cornish All Blacks in black and gold tonight – hopes to clinch a cup hat-trick as Cornwall captain on his home ground.

Cornwall beat Devon 36-15 last time out at Launceston and retained the cup last year with a workmanlike 17-0 win at Plymouth Albion, where former Cornish All Blacks flyer Lewis Paterson – now at Ivybridge RFC - was a stand-out performer.

For their part Devon – beaten 45-20 by a game-hardened Royal Navy team at Devonport Services RFC three weeks ago – are regrouping under head coach Ruairi Cushion and buoyed by the inclusion of experienced and enthusiastic former Exeter Chiefs lock Chris Bentley (pictured) as skipper.

Pro-active Bentley, 34 is one of a quartet of Exmouth RFC players in the new-look Devon side and says: "I am hoping we can get a bit of pride back in wearing the Devon jersey and push the team back to the top tier of county rugby.”

Cushion’s county coaching set-up is boosted by the assistance of Tiverton RFC player-coach Wayne Sprangle and Devon stalwart Gareth Jones.
