Thomas, 29, and Gloucester Rugby’s Bath-born fly half Freddie Burns, 21, get their chance as players from Aviva Premiership finalists Leicester and Harlequins are unavailable.

London Irish forward Jamie Gibson and Saracens’ utility back Richard Wigglesworth are also added to the squad.

England head coach Lancaster said: “We will obviously be without the Leicester and Harlequins players but this is a great opportunity for the rest of the squad - as well as Freddie, Jamie, Richard and Haydn - to put a marker down before we leave for the tour (to South Africa next month).”

Gloucestershire’s Bristol-born Scarlets number eight Ben Morgan, Exeter’s Tom Johnson and Bath duo Lee Mears, from Devon, and Carl Fearns – already included in England’s tour squad – are included in the 27 for May 27.
