PENZANCE-NEWLYN RECEIVE PRESIDENT'S AWARD

The Rugby Football Union's Senior Vice President John Owen will officially present Penzance & Newlyn RFC with their 2009 President's XV Award on Friday at Westholme.

The West Cornwall club were honoured last month when they were named winners in the 'More Volunteers' category.

The President's XV awards' recognises the commitment to excellence of grassroots rugby clubs throughout the country. In its third year, the 2009 awards attracted 224 entries. Each category winner picks up £500 each, while the 30 runners-up collected £100 each, totalling £10,500 of investment in the grassroots game.

Penzance & Newlyn RFC were recognised after they ran a media campaign with their local paper to promote an open evening which engaged parents of the club's 200 junior members. Now they have 20 more active volunteers.

"These awards recognise the outstanding work being done in clubs throughout the country and it's an honour to be able to highlight the outstanding work done by the thousands of volunteers to make the game flourish," said RFU President Brian Williams.

"All of the clubs show how expertise, enthusiasm and imagination can make a huge impact on the success of our clubs and the way they connect with their communities."

The awards were decided by a panel of judges consisting of RFU President Brian Williams, Senior Vice President John Owen, Junior Vice President Richard Appleby, immediate Past President Bob Taylor, RFUW President Gill Burns, England's most-capped player Jason Leonard and Rugby World Editor Paul Morgan.
