WOMENS HOCKEY Clifton target second round success

Investec womens hockey league logoBristol-based Clifton Ladies bid to build on an opening winning start when they play their second Women’s Premier Division home match in a week on Saturday.

Aileen Davis’ side beat Bowdon Hightown 2-1 thanks to second half Harriet Pearce and Claire Thomas goals and are now set to host Canterbury, who drew goalless at Holcombe, in round two.

Kim Pullon scored twice as Gloucester City set out their stall with a 5-0 Women's Conference West home win over newly promoted University of Bristol.

Terri Brown, Maisie Robertson and Zoe Burford were also on target for City, who face a late start – 1800 - at Southport on Saturday.

Southport started their season with a 3-1 win at Firebrands, where Holly Savage scored for the Bristol side after they trailed 2-0. Bristol’s Brands face another tough test in round two, at Sutton Coldfield.

It doesn’t get any easier for University of Bristol as they visit Swansea Spartans, 1-0 opening day winners at Exeter’s Isca University thanks to Natalie Blyth’s 63rd minute penalty corner winner.

Isca University now visit Oxford Hawks, off to a flying start as 4-1 home winners over Southampton’s Trojans.

Saturday also marks the opening weekend for the regional West Clubs Women's Hockey League and it's top flight teams in Premier Division 1.
