WOMENS HOCKEY Clifton Ladies to the fore

Investec Womens Hockey League logoClifton Ladies Hockey Club host Bowdon Hightown at Coombe Dingle Sports Complex tomorrow seeking to consolidate a top four place with a fourth consecutive Investec Women’s League win.

The Bristol side have made a brilliant start to 2014 with home wins over University of Birmingham (4-0) Olton & West Warwicks (4-0) and last week’s 1-0 victory at Leicester, courtesy of Liz Sinton’s 64th minute penalty corner strike.

Clifton’s three-match winning run has enabled them to soar from sixth to fourth above Leicester and Bowdon, beaten 3-2 at home by University of Birmingham last Saturday.

Clifton are skippered by Aileen Davis. The Bristol club’s top scorer is eight-goal Dutch ace Els Mansell.

Leaders Slough host second placed Buckingham in the Women’s Conference West match of the day.

Both sides seek to follow-up 5-0 wins, Slough victorious at Firebrands while defending champions Buckingham beat basement side Exe.

Tomorrow Bristol based Brands make the short trip to third placed Swansea Spartans, who drew 0-0 at fourth placed Oxford Hawks last Saturday.

Exe host Southampton side Trojans, who drew 1-1 with second from bottom Barnes thanks to Jenny Peebles 46th minute leveller.

Tomorrow Barnes host Isca University, who swept up to fifth following a 3-1 home win over Gloucester City and two more goals for Investwec Women’s League 18-goal top scorer Claire Thomas. Julia Blackstock also scored for Isca.

Zoe Burford scored for Gloucester, who host Hawks tomorrow. Burford is City's top scorer with eight goals.
