HOCKEY Clifton target winning start to second half

South West's top women's hockey team Clifton resume their Investec Women's Premier Division programme against University of Birmingham at Coombe Dingle Sports Complex, Bristol today (1300).
Aileen Davis' Clifton side begin the 2014 half of the season in sixth place and looking to complete the double over their visitors following a 3-2 win in Birmingham in September during a scorching eight-match unbeaten league start.
Clifton completed the 2013 half of the season with a steadying 2-2 draw at seventh placed Beeston following back to back defeats against leaders Canterbury (3-2) and third placed Surbiton (2-0). Dutch ace Els Mansell starts the second half of the season as Clifton top scorer with seven Premier Division goals.
In Women's Conference West, sixth placed Isca University host fourth placed Swansea Spartans at the University of Exeter Sports Park (1230) while eighth placed Firebrands host seventh placed Gloucester City in a local derby at Bradley Stoke Community School (1230).
Isca boast the country's top women's scorer, 16-goal Claire Thomas. Team-mate Taryn Beuthin starts the second half of the season with seven goals, along with Gloucester's Zoe Burford, Trojans' Sally Gibson and Buckingham's Oxford-born former Bath ace Zoe Shipperley.
Relegation haunted Exe face a tough start to the new year at high flying Oxford Hawks (1200).
