HOCKEY Super Sunday - cup semi and title decider

University of Exeter's South African Olympic hockey ace Ian HaleyIt's a huge hockey Sunday for the region's top national league sides today.

At 1230 top flight Bristol side Clifton Ladies are set to host Premier rivals Sutton Coldfield in the Investec Women's Cup semi finals at Clifton College Sports Ground (see link below).

Sixth placed Clifton completed their Premier programme with a 2-2 comeback draw at Bowdon Hightown yesterday thanks to goals from Emily Atkinson (44 mins) and returning Liz Sinton (48) after trailing 2-0. Seventh placed Sutton Coldfield - apt name - had their match at Reading snowed off.

If Clifton’s 11-goal league thriller at Sutton is anything to go by, top flight women’s hockey fans are in for a real treat in Bristol today.

Clifton will want to avenge an early season 2-0 home defeat by today’s visitors, especially as they edged December’s away league encounter 6-5.

Runaway Women’s Conference West champions Buckingham host Premier side Bowdon Hightown in today’s other semi.

Then at 1400 University of Exeter host Cardiff & UWIC in a Men's Conference West title decider in front of hundreds of supporters at the newly refurbished University of Exeter Sports Park.

Both sides head into the match on three-match winning runs with Cardiff - containing Welsh and Swedish international players - topping the table by a point from second placed Exeter, who boast South African Olympic playmaker Ian Haley (pictured).

There will be added spice to the game as it has been disgnated the university's hockey varsity meaning hundreds of sports-suporting students are anticipated to cheer on the home team.

Previous varsity crowds have peaked at 700 and organisers are hoping - with support from the Devon hockey fraternity - to beat that record and near the 1,000-mark at the park.
