Plymouth Marjon HC moved back up to fifth in the West Clubs Women’s Hockey League top flight following their home win over third placed Cheltenham HC in typically wintry conditions at the University of St Mark & St John.
Bizzie Dinnis scored the 27th minute winner for Plymouth, who had the better of the first half against a well organised visiting side, skippered by central defender Rachel Owen.
Dinnis broke the deadlock after Plymouth attacked in waves during a proverbial end-to-end opening spell, whipped up by an across-the-pitch bitingly cold sou' westerly.
If Plymouth just edged possession and attacking play in the first 35 minutes, then the same could be said of Cheltenham in the second half.
Winger Emily Hobbs fired over three pacey crosses that cried out for a finish while 17-year-old attacking right back Izzy Fowler was denied by the boot of home keeper Lucy Neve as the whites upped their bid for a leveller.
Nevertheless Mel Liddington’s side countered well with playmaker Molly Walsh again outstanding for Plymouth as the reds recorded their second home win of the season to soar up the table.
Plymouth seek to continue their winning form when they complete the first half of the season with another tough test, at fourth placed Team Bath Buccaneers today (1100) while Cheltenham host Exeter side Isca Ladies at Balcarras School (1400).
West Clubs leaders Exe visit Bournemouth tomorrow (1400) and will be guaranteed top spot over Christmas and into the New Year as they boast a five-point lead at the start of play today.
