MENS HOCKEY Ross scores to send Greens top

mens hockey league logoUniversity of Exeter head into Saturday's Men's Hockey League top of the table clash at Cardiff & UWIC as the new Conference West leaders.

Cardiff's 1-0 defeat at Guildford saw the blues slip off the summit, enabling Exeter to take over at the top on goal difference following a 1-1 home draw with Havant.

Exeter's 20-year-old ace Andrew Ross levelled from a 20th minute penalty corner after quick-out-of-the-blocks Havant opened the scoring through Pol Soms Irazola from free play in the fifth minute.

Both teams have overcome slow starts to move up a gear as the national league season begins to warm-up with three teams - Exeter, Guildford and Cardiff – tied on 15 points at the top of the Conference after eight rounds.

Team Bath Buccaneers are fourth, a point behind the top three following a 2-1 defeat at Whitchurch.

Rhys Welsh's double (12, 17) was enough to see Tom Fisher's side home at WIS following Tim Davenport's ninth minute penalty corner opener.

Rollo Lewis also scored twice, for Firebrands, as they were pipped 3-2 by visitors University of Birmingham while Cheltenham lost 5-2 at Fareham after trailing 4-0. Alex Hay (61) and vice captain Peter Duffy (69) scored for Cheltenham.
