MENS HOCKEY Howson fires Cardiff & UWIC top

Cardiff & UWIC top Men’s Conference West following a top of the table 3-3 draw between title rivals University of Exeter and Team Bath Buccaneers.
Jimmy Devney’s Cardiff side beat visitors Fareham 2-1 thanks to goals from Mark Whatling (5pc) and Richard Howson (67).
Alex Boxall had levelled the scores on 10 minutes so Howson’s late strike proved a winning one.
Cardiff & UWIC have now won four out of five ahead and edged a point ahead of Guildford, 4-0 winners at Firebrands.
Buccs are third and Exeter fourth following their drawn out affair at UoE Sports Park, where Andrew Ross followed up his midweek BUCS hat-trick with a second minute penalty corner opener.
South African Olympian Ian Haley increased the home side’s advantage by making it 2-0 in the 11th minute but Buccs rallied to level by half time with penalty corner goals from Tom Alsop (21) and Tim Davenport (33).
James Carson again put Exeter ahead, in the 48th minute, only for Bath to level two minutes later.
Draw specialists Cheltenham remain unbeaten following a 3-3 finish at Havant, where the home side rallied with three goals in the final four minutes.
Alex Salmon (11) Tom Cole (15ps) and Matthew Fairburn (43) put Cheltenham 3-0 up.
In another high scoring game Whitchurch lost 4-3 at University of Birmingham despite goals for Nick Rees (17pc) Louis Jones (42) and skipper Tom Fisher (60).
• Isca top the men’s regional Davis Wood Hockey League following three wins on the trot and a 5-2 Premiership derby win over Exeter & Culm Vale ahead of Saturday’s trip to fifth placed Swindon.
Jon Wright (2) Sam Palfrey, Jamie Cooke and Liam Wakfield were Isca’s scorers.
Plymouth Marjon moved up to third in the top flight following a 5-1 home win over Cardiff University and two more goals for free scoring skipper Simon Fenwick.
