Table topping Team Bath Buccaneers bid to extend their England Hockey League Men’s Conference West winning run to eight matches on Sunday and end 2011 on a high.
Buccs host Cheltenham in the final league match of the year before the mid-season midwinter break buoyed by a 2-0 top of the table win at second placed University of Birmingham.
Bath’s seventh successive success came courtesy of second half goals from New Zealand midfielder Shaun Matthews (40 mins) and Thomas Alsop (47).
Cheltenham drew 2-2 in Birmingham, at Bournville, despite leading 2-0 thanks to goals either side of half time by James Astley (33) and Alex Hay (41).
Tom Rowland hit Bournville’s 69th minute penalty corner leveller.
Sunday’s match at the University of Bath Sports Training Village starts at 1300.
Cardiff & UWIV host third placed Havant, who drew 1-1 at Whitchurch.
Adam Barker opened the scoring for Whitchurch in the 45th minute. Havant levelled from Andrew Pett’s 62nd minute penalty.
Seventh placed Whitchurch visit ninth placed Lichfield on Sunday.
Cardiff & UWIC return home (WIS, 1300) following a seven-goal thriller at mid-table rivals Fareham, where five goals were scored in seven of the last nine minutes.
Craig Peel claimed Fareham’s 68th minute fourth goal in a pulsating 4-3 win after Tim Jones had put UWIC ahead from a 15th minute penalty.
Peel made it 2-1 in the 61st minute, Liam Brignull levelled in the 63rd, Fareham’s Alex Bennett made it 3-2 a minute later with his second of the game before Morgan Harries hauled UWIC back to 3-3 in the 65th.
University of Exeter will be anxious to replicate their first match form when they visit Reading in the Men’s Premier Division on Sunday (1430).
The greens started the season with a surprise 3-2 home win over the star-studded Berkshire side, fifth in the table and seven points clear of ninth placed Exeter at the halfway stage of the season.
Exeter have slipped a point behind eighth placed Southgate following a 2-0 home defeat by defending champions East Grinstead.
Reading – like East Grinstead – are set to be without their Great Britain international stars as they are preparing for next month’s Champions Trophy in New Zealand.
