2018 Channel League amateur golf champions Gloucestershire got their 2019 title defence off to a winning start by beating last summer’s runners-up Cornwall 9-6 at West Cornwall.
Gloucestershire pipped Cornwall to the title last year with an unbeaten record of four games won, two halved in the season-long men's regional matchplay competition. Yesterday at Lelant the sides were tied 2 ½-all before Gloucestershire pulled away to claim the singles 6 ½-3 ½ with wins from Joe Long, Nick Day, Jake Phillips, Charlie McLean, Josh Denley and Tom Workman.
Gloucestershire’s Joe Harvey halved with Conor Wilson whose Cornish compatriots George Leigh, Joe Reynard and Richard Jasper won their singles. Photo shows Launceston's Jasper putting on his way to winning at the 17th.
Somerset – who finished third last year – rallied from 3 ½-1 ½ down at High Post to pip hosts Wiltshire 8-7 following a superb “second half” comeback.
Singles wins for Phil White, Will Poole and Jonny Grace turned the game back in Somerset’s favour before Wiltshire skipper Ali James convincingly beat Ollie Worts.
Sam Fernley, Justin Lane and Taylor Stote won their singles for Somerset meaning Jeremy Larcombe’s half point was enough to complete a memorable turnaround.
