St Mellion's James Ruth topped the Altorreal Futures Open leaderboard with a scorching eight under par 64 opening round in Spain today.

Ruth, 26, rallied from an opening bogey five at the first to rack up eight birdies and take a three-shot lead on the first day of the three-day Hi5 Pro Tour event in Murcia.

South Devon-based professional Scott Drummond – the 2004 Volvo PGA champion - also started with a sub-par round, carding two under 70.

Drummond, 37, tees off tomorrow's round in seventh place.

Both players are using the event to acclimatise ahead of next month’s 72 hole PGA European Tour Qualifying School second stage in Spain.
