Saltash United are assured of playing tomorrow - and not many South West non-league teams are able to say that with confidence.
The Ashes’ Cornish derby against Western League leaders Helston Athletic has been switched from Kellaway Park to the all weather Devon FA pitch at Coach Road, Newton Abbot, with a 2.30pm kick-off.
Desperate times - weather wise at least - call for desperate measures and both clubs will be pleased to have a game to look forward to.
Saltash may be struggling at the wrong end of the table but they’re biting at the bit to return to action against Matt Cusack's table toppers.
In their last match the Ashes won 2-1 at Wellington, their first away league win in almost a year, thanks to goals from the outstanding Joe Preece and midfield maestro Josh Toulson.
United boss Macca Brown said: “I was absolutely delighted with the lads. I’m not usually one to talk about how ‘proud’ I am of the team in a moment, which is maybe something I should do more, but I certainly told them that’s how I felt after the game at Wellington.
“Not necessarily because of the result but how they went about their business. They weren’t affected by conceding a penalty after five minutes and came back strong and won the game, embracing the kind of game it was along the way.”
Brown added: “We haven’t been great at overcoming negative moments this season, and going ahead nine times and losing supports that.
“But we met as a squad and spoke about things several weeks ago, which was driven by Jordan Duffey and the lads are backing up their words, which is something I’ll always have respect for, because in this game it’s always so easy just to use the right words and not take it any further.
“But including the 4-0 friendly win against Liskeard last Saturday we’ve had four really positive results in a row with three clean sheets along the way, so we have to continue with that now.
“We are so disappointed we’ve not been able to back that result up with the games against St Blazey and Illfracombe with them being postponed but we can now look forward to Helston on Saturday where we’ll need the same approach to recent games.”
