Rooney delight with first win as boss, Flynn positives

argyle logo2013Wayne Rooney was pleased with his first win as Plymouth Argyle head coach following a 3-0 EFL Cup first round victory over Cheltenham Town.

Rooney said: “I thought we were good. First half we had to be more patient with the ball.”

Second half goals from strikers Ben Waine, Ryan Hardie and Mustapha Bundu sealed Argyle's cup success and a trip to Championship rivals Watford in round two at the end of the month.

Rooney said: “I felt second half we came out with more control, more patience and obviously got the well-deserved win.

“I saw a lot tonight I didn’t see on Sunday and now hopefully we can put Sunday behind us.

“We won the game and scored three good goals, but the best thing for me was Joe Edwards winning a tackle that he didn’t deserve to and that’s why he’s our captain, a leader.

“We have to be more clinical. Although we won by three goals tonight we could have won by more. I left Ryan Hardie on tonight because I wanted to him to get a goal, because striker need goals for confidence. He worked really hard at the top and got a well-deserved goal.”

Cheltenham Town boss Michael Flynn said: “For 65 minutes we did really well until they scored and then our heads dropped a little bit.

"Joe Day made one of the best saves I have seen for a long time, we switch off and they have a tap in.

"If they don’t keep learning from those experiences they will have a short career, you have to use these experiences to grow, learn and adapt, and realise the higher you go the quicker the game, particularly in and around their attacking area. Some real positives for us.

"We did have moments in the game. There are levels, and they won because they make the right decisions more often than not.

"We are a team learning, players have not got a lot of experience but there were some real positives. I thought Ethon Archer did very well and Joe was excellent.

"Unfortunately tonight we came up against a team that were better than us.

“A big positive for me tonight was no injuries.”

Argyle host Hull on Saturday, Cheltenham are at Grimsby.
