TORQUAY UNITED former players in the frame

Torquay United Football Club logoA string of former players will be linked with the vacant manager’s post at ambitious Torquay United as the yellows seek to bounce back to the National League top flight at the first attempt.

United parted company with Gary Owers yesterday after tumbling to 14th in National League South with three wins from their opening nine league games.

Former boss Kevin Nicholson is a fans’ favourite to return to Plainmoor while former Truro City management duo Lee Hodges and Chris Todd will be in the frame along with another former Truro boss Steve Tully – all four have played in the Football League for the Gulls.

In announcing Owers’ departure United chairman Clarke Osborne said: “We are working hard on securing a new manager and confident that we will be able to make an announcement shortly."

Owers said: “I recognise that this ambitious club cannot wait and need to look at an alternative direction.

“I wish everyone connected with the club from the chairman to supporters, success on and off the field and look forward to seeing the club in the National League next season."

Owers was appointed as Nicholson's replacement last September but failed to prevent the Gulls' relegation to National League South.
