Sheridan attention focused on Plymouth promotion

Plymouth Argyle boss John Sheridan has set his sights on promotion from League Two next season.

Sheridan said: “I have got improve on this season and there’s only one place we can finish if we are eighth, ninth or whatever this season. We have got to finish in the top seven next season.

“I have been here a year and I think we have improved a hell of a lot this season, not just the league position but I think we have done things a lot better.

“Our home form has really let us down this season though and I never really expected that.

“I have got to work on making us better. I will do that. That is my job and why I was brought in. Next season I expect us to get out of the division.

“I will make that clear now: whoever I bring in I expect those players to get us out of this division."

In Plymouth's matchday programmeThe Pirlgrim Sheridan revealed he is looking to bring in "seven or eight new players" this summer.

He explained: “I have got a few out of contract and I have got to make some tough decisions. I need three or four Paul Wotton’s, it’s just drive and determination.

“I will have a smaller squad next season but hopefully it’s going to be better quality. I want people who are really pushing (for promotion) and I want a hunger in the team.

“Ten games ago there was a great opportunity but that’s gone now and I have got to look at what I can do better as a manager.”

Argyle are ninth in League Two ahead of a last-day away trip to south coast rivals Portsmouth on Saturday.

Pompey are 11th a point behind Plymouth, who drew 1-1 at home to 18th placed Hartlepool United after taking a 30th minute lead through Jason Banton’s superb solo goal.

Pools’ on-loan Manchester United teenager Jack Barmby – son of Nick – levelled on 67 minutes.

20-goal top scorer Reuben Reid - on loan from Yeovil Town - was voted Plymouth's player of the season by supporters.

Central defender Curtis Nelson captured the vote for young player of the season.
