LEAGUE ONE Plymouth Argyle 4 Stockport County 2

Tom Cleverley’s new-look Plymouth Argyle soared out of the League One basement with an outstanding 4-2 home win over last season’s play-off semi-finalists Stockport County.

Argyle took the lead from a 24th minute corner from the left taken by Matty Sorinola and headed into his own goal by County striker Kyle Wootton.

The greens doubled their lead from a thumping Caleb Watts strike from the angle of the box into the far corner from another Sorinola flag kick from the right on 39 minutes.

County skipper Oliver Norwood scored from a hotly-disputed first half stoppage time penalty to make it 2-1 at half time.

Player of the match Bradley Ibrahim restored Argyle’s two-goal lead in the 48th minute with a low shot from distance after being teed up by fellow central midfielder Malachi Boateng.

From yet another Sorinola corner, Ibrahim’s shot went inches wide of the post on 64 minutes and then the 20 year old midfielder forced a good save from Corey Addai on 68 minutes.

Swiss striker Lorent Taloj latched on to a through ball from keeper Luca Ashby-Hammond to run on and slot home Argyle’s fourth goal in the 75th minute.

County got a late consolation when Wootton scored with a superb strike into the corner from just inside the box in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

The goal did little to take the gloss off Argyle's best performance since Cleverley's preseason arrival.
