EFL Cup Plymouth Argyle 3 Cheltenham Town 0

Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth Argyle eased past League Two Cheltenham and through to the EFL Cup second round thanks to second half goals from strikers Ben Waine, Ryan Hardie and Mustapha Bundu.

New Zealand international striker Waine was first to react, with a tap-in, after Robins keeper Joe Day palmed Adam Randell’s thumping 20-yard free kick on to the underside of the crossbar on 62 minutes.

On 81 minutes Hardie - from close range - coolly converted substitute Ibrahim Cissoko’s cross from the right.

Substitute Bundu added a third in the 84th minute with a scorching 20 yard finish.

Town’s best effort came from Ethon Archer, who hit the post with a 20-yard shot that beat Argyle keeper Conor Hazard and then rebounded off the back of the Irish keeper on 40 minutes.

It was the closest Cheltenham came to breaking the deadlock in the tie although Harrison Sohna went close with a first-time effort from outside the box three minutes earlier which skimmed just past the upright.

Rooney made nine changes from the side which started the 4-0 Championship defeat at Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday with skipper Joe Edwards sparking a late first half flurry of attacks with a 30 yard drive that was deflected off target on 44 minutes.

Callum Wright also had a goalbound shot deflected around the post and seconds later Bali Mumba's rising drive from 10 yards flew inches wide.

Attendance 12,058 (140 away).

Argyle will travel to Championship rivals Watford in the second round, provisionally on Tuesday August 27 (tbc).
