KJM SPORT REPORT Saltash United 4 Wellington AFC 1

A week is a long time in football. Before Saturday, Saltash had lost their first five Western League games of the campaign.

Move forward seven days and the Ashes have bagged four points from two league games, a midweek 1-1 draw at Brixham followed by this emphatic win at The Waterways Stadium.

Add on the 6-0 FA Vase triumph against Radstock Town and Saltash’s change of fortune has been eye-catching.

Against Wellington, Kieran O’Melia’s 12th minute goal put them ahead although Wellington were level within 10 minutes through Doug Cornillo.

But three goals in 10 minutes from Jordan Ewing (52 minutes) Joe Preece (56) and Tylor Love-Holmes (62) underlined Saltash’s growing confidence and left them as impressive winners.

Ashes boss Macca Brown said: “It’s been a really positive week. We were fantastic on Saturday. We have now scored 11 goals in three games and more importantly conceded only two, so we are really happy.

“Wellington have had some good results this season so to win so well is pleasing, and to be honest it should have been more.

“We probably should have been out of sight at half-time, with some brilliant attacking play.

“Jordan, Preecey, Tylor and Jake (Foster) all had clear cut chances that really should have led to goals, but Kieran’s goal nestled in between them was all we had to show for it.

“But that attacking threat gave us huge belief for the second half and we weren’t to be disappointed.

“We didn’t allow the missed opportunities to frustrate us and we were more clinical and scored some great goals.

“There were some outstanding performances throughout and maybe it is starting to click a little bit, not just the cohesion and balance of the team but the understanding of what it takes to get results in this league.

“We had several unavailable due to illness which seems to be going around again, and then lost Sam Cox in the warm up due to injury.

“This gave a chance to others and it was brilliant to see Jack Jefford make his debut for the club at just 16.

“He deserved a taste as he’s been doing well with the reserves and we recognised that.

“He very nearly scored, he’ll be replaying that in his head all week no doubt!

“I don’t know exactly if I’ve got this right but it was pleasing to see the likes of Jack, Kieran, Ben Goulty, Hayden, Henry and Preecey, all lads who came through the youth teams here at the club, on the pitch playing for the first team and winning, and that’s not including Reece and Coxy who weren’t available.

“I’m not a Saltash man myself but I have always believed in the importance of a local core if possible. I had that at Millbrook and it’s something this club has been built on in recent years and I think the supporters are recognising that at Saltash and are enjoying it.

“It gives hope to those in the club that there is a pathway and that’s how it should be - but of course we have to win and on Saturday it was great to get our first three points on the board.”
