KJM SPORT REPORT Godolphin Atlantic 1 Newquay 3

SWPL logoTwenty-five hours later the derby action switched to the north coast where Newquay spoilt the party with an emphatic performance and victory at Godolphin Way.

The G men had been impressive in winning 2-1 at St Blazey in their last match but an outbreak of Covid at the club had certainly had its effect by the time the neighbours came to visit.

That was not put forward as an excuse by Godolphin manager Adam Paterson, who said the Peppermints were well worth their 3-1 win.

Danny Carne’s goal might have come in the third and last minute of time added on.

But it served to emphasise Newquay’s dominance on a heavy pitch in pouring rain which became increasingly heavy.

The visitors, seventh in the table, were 2-0 up at half-time thanks to goals from Cameron Turner and Scott Flannigan and should have been further ahead before 16-year-old Coen Briggs set up a tense last five minutes by reducing the arrears.

Newquay did what teams do when playing for time – get the ball near the opposition’s corner flag and keep it there.

While it was in and around that area, and as the game entered three minutes of time added on, Godolphin’s Matt Sanders saw red.

Within a minute former G favourite Phil Lowry appear followed him to the dressing room after he spoke out of turn.

Referee Matt Redmond didn’t deserve to have to hand out red cards, having officiated a tense local affair quite brilliantly.

There was still time for Carne to force the ball home from close range after a free kick was spilled by keeper Dan Peters in atrocious conditions.
