KJM SPORT REPORT Bodmin Town 2 Launceston AFC 1

A last-gasp strike from Dan Jennings brought joy to Bodmin and despair to a Launceston side who came so close to an impressive Peninsula Premier West point at Priory Park last night.

With the game entering the third and final minute of time added on, Jason Vincent’s fine cross from wide on the right had substitute Levi Landricombe stretching to get in a header.

His effort looped over Launceston keeper Lewis Slade, hit the bar and bounced out for predator Jennings to hook the ball into the net with his left foot for his 15th goal of the season.

The game hardly had time to be restarted before the referee blew for full time.

While Bodmin’s celebrations were understandably raucous, some of the Launceston players fell to the ground with exhaustion and disbelief.

They had nothing to be ashamed of. Manager Dan Hart is moulding a strong unit which looks difficult to beat and has a goal threat.

Although Bodmin grew stronger as the game progressed and carved out a series of chances in a dominant second half display when it was 1-1, there was always the sense that the Clarets could nick a goal on the break.

Launceston had opened the game on the front foot with Ben Waters immediately causing problems but they found themselves 1-0 down in the fifth minute.

In what was Bodmin’s first serious attack; Sol Wheatley forced a fine save out of Slade but the ball broke loose and Jason Vincent was at the far post to score.

It seemed certain to be 2-0 in the 13th minute when Mike Steele unleashed a stunning, curling shot from 25 yards but Slade was equal to it with a spectacular save, tipping the ball away for a corner.

But Launceston worked their way back into the game and equalised on the half-hour with a similarly exceptional shot from 20 yards by Josh Harris which gave Bodmin keeper Dale England no chance.

Three minutes later Bodmin had Ruben Kane sin-binned for dissent. Kane had been booked earlier and when the official showed him another yellow card, some in the crowd thought he had been sent off.

But with a sin-bin offence, which can only be for dissent, a yellow card is shown even though it doesn’t count as a second yellow.

Bodmin manager Darren Gilbert was perplexed as to why Kane wasn’t allowed back on before half-time, having left the field in the 33rd minute but the referee stood his ground.

The home side stepped up the tempo after the break, with Kane reinstated, and the introduction of super sub Landricombe midway through the half strengthened their attacking threat.

But it was strike partner Jennings who found himself in the thick of the action in the 73rd minute as he raced onto a long ball and appeared to be taken out at the knees by Launceston keeper Slade as he raced to the edge of the penalty area.

From my vantage point it was the clearest penalty offence you’ll witness but the referee, who was close to the incident, waved play on and later insisted he thought Slade didn’t make contact with Jennings.

If he didn’t, the referee should have booked Jennings for diving, surely?

The prolific Bodmin striker had the last laugh. He said afterwards he didn’t feel he played that well – but he has a knack of being in the right place at the right time.
