FA CUP Saltash United 1 Paulton Rovers 0

danny by kjm 2Saltash United produced another FA Cup upset as Tom Moxham’s 25th minute goal was enough to see off Southern League 1 South Paulton Rovers.

After also knocking out Western Premier Plymouth Parkway, Dane Bunney’s Ashes can now look forward to tomorrow’s first qualifying round draw when teams like Truro City, Tiverton and Taunton join the prestigious competition.

It was a deserved victory for Saltash who, to a man, worked tirelessly to preserve their slender lead, especially in an increasingly tense last 10 minutes.

After a bright start by the visitors, the tie took a significant turn within the space of two minutes.

First came the goal, with Moxham’s fierce shot, tipped up high into the air by Paulton keeper Aaron Sainsbury, dropping under the bar and bouncing over the line.

Two minutes later the visitors were reduced to 10 men when defender Craig Allen was sent off for a foul on Henry Wilson.

Paulton were not happy with the red card ruling and spent the rest of the half trying to reorganise as Saltash, with young sub Ben Holton - on for the injured Mikey Smith after six minutes - keeping the visitors’ backline busy.

Paulton eventually put together a classy move, ending with Dan Cottle curling a shot from just inside the penalty area over the bar after being played through by Will Hailston.

Saltash would have expected an onslaught in the second half but barely two minutes after the restart had a golden opportunity.

Moxham’s left footed free kick from the right found Reece Thompson unmarked on the far post and he should have scored rather than heading into the side netting.

Danny Lewis and Thompson had half chances before Paulton finally came to the party in the 57th minute with a superb curling free kick from Cottle which brought out the best in Ashes keeper Ryan Rickard.

Cottle had another chance in the 69th minute but sent his low shot just wide.

The remainder of the tie was very much an attack versus defence exercise but Paulton could find no way through a determined Saltash side. Ashes defended their penalty area so well keeper Rickard didn’t make another significant save.

United's success was a real team effort, built around the calm influence of experienced trio Lewis, Sam Farrant and skipper Dave Barker.
