LEAGUE 2 Plymouth Argyle 2 Chesterfield 1

Plymouth Argyle FC crestPlymouth boss John Sheridan praised two-goal Reuben Reid as Argyle toppled the Spireites to soar to seventh as leaders Chesterfield slipped to second.

Sheridan said: "Reuben was a threat. He could have probably had a hat-trick. But I don't want to single out just one player because we are all in this together and the team won us the match. There were some outstanding performances out there. Everyone played a part."

Reid opened the scoring on 27 minutes with an acute angled strike from the right that flew past diving keeper Tommy Lee and in off the far post.

Chesterfield countered in the second half with Ritchie Humphreys restoring parity with a deflected drive on 56 minutes, just after centre forward Marc Richards' close-range strike came back off the bar.

Argyle – read Reid – were not to be denied and the Plymouth striker took his season's goal haul to 18 with a "brilliant" 58th minute solo goal, cleverly feigning past central defender Liam Cooper on the edge of the box before sending a rising 20 yard rocket into the far corner.

Sheridan said: "It was a great result, great performance. We had a desire and work ethic to get the three points we were after.
"I thought we were brilliant, we battled when we had to battle but created some good chances as well. We should have scored more goals, we were always lively on the break with pace.
"And when we had to defend, we defended. There were one or two crosses that flew across our box but we have created all the opportunities and were well deserved winners.
"Again we looked a fit team. We never say die and kept going until the end and we have done that a few times this season.
"I was disappointed they equalised. We were playing too deep at the start of the second half.
"After Reuben scored a brilliant second goal we pushed up 10 or 15 yards and I think it helped us hell of a lot."
