LEAGUE 2 Howzat? Knill hails 'massive' Torquay win

Torquay top scorer Rene Howe, courtesy TUFC copyright pinnacle photo agencyTorquay United manager Alan Knill admits last night’s 2-1 home win over Chesterfield was “massive” and it is important to follow-up with another, similar, Plainmoor result on Saturday against relegation rivals York City.

Knill said: “It was a massive win. We needed it. We have been playing all right, we just haven’t got the three points to show for it and now we have.

“We are three unbeaten now and it’s something to build on.

“I am delighted with them but now we must go again because there are still seven matches to go and the next one here is on Saturday and another big game, York, so there's no patting ourselves on the back. We have to go again and try and improve on that performance (because) it was much more like it.”

The win lifted Torquay to 19th while inactive York slipped to 23rd as four at the bottom won.

Accrington Stanley stormed out of the bottom two with a 4-0 home win over 18th placed Wimbledon, Barnet beat Fleetwood 2-0 and Plymouth Argyle – who visit Chesterfield on Saturday – followed up their 2-1 home win over Fleetwood by winning 2-0 at Southend.

All four sides are on 43 points with seven games remaining meaning talk of 48 points being enough to assure safety seem premature.

The Gulls got off to a flying start last night thanks to impressive midfielder Joss Labadie’s third goal in three games since teaming up with Torquay on loan from Notts County.

United top scorer Rene Howe (pictured) took his tally to 16 goals with a deft back heel to divert on-loan Sheffield United winger Jordan Chappell’s thumping strike past Chesterfield’s diving keeper Tommy Lee.

If anything signified Torquay’s turnaround – and fortunes – it was that goal.

Liam Cooper’s 77th minute goal set Torquay nerves jangling but the resolute Gulls defence held firm for a vital victory.
