Exeter City boss Paul Tisdale was delighted with game changer Alan Gow as the hot shot Scot's 84th minute penalty levelled the first professional Devon derby of 2013 1-1 under lights at Torquay last night.
Tisdale said: "Alan Gow was fantastic for us. We were always going to bring him on at half time, he knew that and was ready. As he proved, he is a very good player if you get the ball to him."
Gow won and converted the spot kick after being felled by Torquay right back Joe Oastler.
Torquay had taken a 15th minute lead through 12-goal top scorer Rene Howe, after Exeter's Tommy Doherty was adjudged to have handled Nathan Craig's deep cross to the far post, aimed at Howe.
Torquay boss Martin Ling: "They came here third in the table and we got a point off them. We have drawn three and lost three and obviously need a win but this gives us some hope we are starting to head in the right direction.
"We have got Chesterfield here on Saturday, so we are home again and hopefully we can play for 90 minutes like we did in the first half tonight.
"We need to build on that and we need a win to get confidence back in the camp because we keep conceding so many goals late on in games between the 84th and 94th minutes. It's frustrating to say the least because that's six (games) without a win now and those late goals are making all the difference.
"Rene Howe is back on a bit of a roll now, that's his 12th goal and he tends to go on runs with his goals, so let's hope this is another one because he has scored twice in two home games.
"He is an important component for us and you always know if he is on the field, he can make something happen."
City boss Tisdale said: "We lost John O'Flynn after five minutes to injury and Jamie Cureton is suspended so we had no recognisable number nine out there, no out and out striker, so it was left to Alan Gow to come on and lead the line.
"He played very well, I thought we played very well as a team in the second half.
"When you are battling back from a goal down in difficult conditions a draw is sufficient. What I do like is that my players are in there in the dressing room a bit grumpy because we did not win.
"But I have told them you do not go backwards getting points. You build with points, and after being behind I feel this is a point gained."
