LEAGUE 2 Sheridan delight at winning Argyle start

John Sheridan's managerial reign at Plymouth kicked off with a crucial win over 18th placed Morecambe - sparked by skipper Conor Hourihane's cracking 10th minute opener.

Victory lifts the Pilgrims up to 22nd and out of the bottom two.

Sheridan said: "The most important thing was getting the three points. We rode our luck at times but all that mattered was getting the win.

"We got off to a flying start with two great goals but when we were 2-0 up we needed to show a bit more nous.

"It's early days yet though and they are a young side. I am going to have to teach them how to build on a lead."

Central midfielder Hourihane – a 21-year-old captain - pounced on a loose ball on the edge of the area to send an unstoppable right-foot rising drive past diving Shrimps keeper Barry Roche to the obvious delight of 6368 Pilgrims fans.

Argyle's joy was doubled six minutes later as Sheridan's first signing as Argyle boss, on-loan Ipswich forward Ronan Murray, set up Plymouth's second goal.

Murray's pacy cross from the left skipped across the rain-lashed Home Park pitch and was turned in off the far upright by right wing Paris Cowan-Hall's cheeky far post flick.

Man of the match Hourihane made an off-the-line clearance to deny Shrimps danger man Kevin Ellison as the visitors pressed.

Shrimps substitute Ryan Williams reduced the deficit in the 81st minute, before fellow sub Jack Redshaw missed a golden opportunity to level and Andrew Parrish saw red.

Impressive Murray smashed a last minute angled shot off the post.
