JOHNSTONES PAINT TROPHY Yeovil edge past Torquay

Gary Johnson says Yeovil Town have something to look forward to following a 5-4 Johnstone’s Paint Trophy penalty shoot-out win at Torquay.

Yeovil now host Wycombe Wanderers in the JPT southern area quarter finals, week commencing December 3.

Glovers boss Johnson said: “It’s a one-off tie, we are through and now we have got a home quarter-final to look forward to, which is good for us and the fans.”

Keanu Marsh-Brown smashed in the fifth Yeovil penalty after keeper Marek Stech had saved Torquay’s third penalty taken by Thomas Cruise.

The second round tie finished 2-2 after 90 minutes with two goals for Torquay’s recalled striker Ryan Jarvis and two – including a stoppage time leveller – for Yeovil number nine James Hayter.

Johnson revealed: “We practised our penalties this morning and I can tell you now they were absolutely useless.

“So (assistant manager) Terry Skiverton and I decided to pick the penalty takers on the strength of their game and that’s what we did and we got all five penalties, which was a much better percentage than we had in training this morning. We put Keanu in fifth because we thought he was our man of the match.”

Gulls manager Martin Ling said: “We are obviously disappointed because we took the lead twice and let them get back twice.

“We are unhappy to go that close, and then to lose 5-4 on penalties.

“It’s disappointing as a manager because you start thinking you could have Wycombe at home next round and then you are not that far from Wembley but it wasn’t to be.”
