HOWE'S THAT? LING HANDS OUT PLAUDITS

torquay united club crestTorquay boss Martin Ling praised match winner Rene Howe and substitute Ryan Jarvis as United gained their 12th Plainmoor win of the season to stay second in League Two by beating resolute Accrington Stanley 1-0.

Gulls target man Howe crashed in his 13th goal of the season in the 73rd minute after great work by on-loan Walsall forward Jarvis.

League Two manager of the month Ling - whose promotion chasing side are five points ahead of fourth placed Crawley with five games remaining - said: "The goal was great and Rene will take all the plaudits but Ryan Jarvis chased down a hopeful ball from Joe Oastler and in doing so set up Rene's goal.

"As a manager you want to see the work that Ryan did and he deserves a share of the plaudits for chasing a seemingly lost cause into the corner.

"Rene's not trained an awful lot, he's carrying a bit of an injury, but he has now gone level with Lee Mansell on 13 goals as top scorer.

"I am quite happy for them to carry on scoring from now until the end of the season if we can get another five 1-0 wins. We will take that."

Unired have now won 1-0 12 times this term.

Ling said: "It's getting to the stage of the season where performances are not as good as they have been and the players are looking nervy, edgy but the important thing was we got another three points.

"I thought it might go away from us when we missed a gilt edged chance which fell to Mark Ellis but he is defender and he did his job at the other end of the pitch, which is important."

Next up for United is Monday’s trip to play off chasing Oxford.
