MINOR MATTERS National Counties Cricket updates

NCCA-Logo MasterCornwall will have Somerset all-rounder Lewis Goldsworthy back in their ranks for their opening National Counties Trophy match against Dorset at Werrington today (1100).

Goldsworthy, 20, has been a regular in Somerset’s LV= County Championship side this season but they sit out the current round of matches and so the England Under-19 international is available for duty with his native county.

Having made his debut for Cornwall four years ago Goldsworthy, who plays his club cricket for Camborne, will take his place in a side that will be captained by Truro’s Scott Harvey.

Kian Burns, a 19-year-old left-hander from Callington, will make his debut for Cornwall.

Dorset include current Hampshire batsman Felix Organ and Ollie Soames and Harry Came, who were released by Hampshire at the end of last season.

Berkshire, who won the Trophy the last time it was contested in 2019, begin their belated title defence against Bedfordshire at Dunstable.

Slough batsman Dan Lincoln, a member of Middlesex’s Vitality Blast side for the past two seasons, returns to Berkshire’s side after last weekend’s victory over Wiltshire in their final warm-up match.

George Thurstance will captain Bedfordshire for the first time in a competitive match having succeeded Andy Reynoldson last year. Matt Coles, the former Kent, Hampshire and Essex all-rounder, set for his National Counties debut having played for Bedfordshire in friendlies last year.

Coles’ former Kent team-mate, seamer Calum Haggett, will also make his National Counties debut for Devon against Herefordshire at the North Devon club in Instow.

Haggett, who began his career with Somerset, has succeeded Peter Trego as Devon’s professional to add experience to a youthful squad.

Alex Barrow has relinquished the captaincy owing to work commitments so Jamie Stephens of Taunton Deane will lead the side.

Fahad Sabir, a left-arm spinner who plays for West Bromwich Dartmouth in the Birmingham & District Premier League, has been included in Devon’s squad for the first time.

Another Birmingham League player, Barnt Green opening batsman Ben Chapman-Lilley, will make his Herefordshire debut while Ombersley and former Loughborough MCCU seamer Nick Hammond is back in the side for the first time since 2018.

Cardiff MCCU batsman Steven Reingold is in line to make his National Counties debut for Wales NC against Buckinghamshire at High Wycombe.

Former Glamorgan batsman Connor Brown, who played for Derbyshire’s Second XI this week, is also in Wales’ squad.

Buckinghamshire have recruited former Worcestershire and Holland batsman Alexei Kervezee, who played for Shropshire in 2018 and 2019, as their new professional as successor to Garry Park.

Norfolk’s burgeoning relationship with Nottinghamshire, which has seen youngsters Ben Panter and Ben Wilcox join the Academy at Trent Bridge, will have a reciprocal benefit for their match against Lincolnshire at Manor Park.

Nottinghamshire have made opening batsman Sol Budinger available for Norfolk’s white ball campaign and he will make his debut against Lincolnshire.

Mark Footitt, the former Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Surrey left-arm pace bowler, is set to make his National Counties debut in a Lincolnshire side that also includes Nottinghamshire off-spinner Matt Carter.

There will also be a National Counties debut for Graham Wagg, the former Warwickshire, Derbyshire and Glamorgan all-rounder.

Having bowed out of first-class cricket at the end of last season, Wagg has now been reunited with his former England Under-19s manager John Abrahams at Shropshire

Former Lancashire captain Abrahams was appointed Shropshire’s director of cricket last year and he has brought in Wagg as the county’s new professional and white ball captain.

Having warmed up with matches against the Second XIs of Lancashire and Worcestershire, Wagg will lead Shropshire for the first time in a competitive match against Northumberland at Oswestry.

Northumberland will give a debut to batsman Sol Bell, who was released by Durham last year.

Former Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Lancashire all-rounder Wayne White will make his competitive debut for Cambridgeshire who play Hertfordshire at Bishop’s Stortford today before hosting Suffolk at Exning tomorrow in a busy Bank Holiday weekend.

Cambridgeshire will become White’s third National Counties side in four years having helped Cheshire win the Trophy in 2018 before playing for Devon in 2019.
