Alfie MacDonald and Ben Ellis took the opportunity to showcase their talent before Cornwall went down to a 100 runs defeat against Somerset in a 50-overs Showcase match at Wadebridge.
Camborne batter MacDonald, Cornwall’s acting-captain, made an unbeaten century with Ellis keeping his company in an unbroken last wicket stand of 62 in 11 overs.
Camborne batter MacDonald, Cornwall’s acting-captain, made an unbeaten century with Ellis keeping his company in an unbroken last wicket stand of 62 in 11 overs.
MacDonald was 76 when the ninth wicket fell but Ellis held up an end, facing 27 balls before he got off the mark, which ensured that his partner reached three figures.
Once MacDonald had completed his century, Ellis cut loose, striking three huge sixes in his unbeaten 29 which ensured that Cornwall batted out their full allocation of overs.
Earlier Ellis, a seamer from Callington, had impressed with the ball by taking four for 40 which checked Somerset’s progress after Will Smeed had entertained a large crowd with 130 from 96 balls with 11 fours and five sixes.
Smeed shared a second wicket partnership of 196 in 26 overs with Archie Vaughan (88) and at one stage it appeared that Cornwall might be chasing a target in excess of 350.
But Ellis and his new ball partner Ryan Tonkin (three for 53) pegged Somerset back with the last eight wickets going down in the final 10 overs of the innings.
