COUNTIES CRICKET Western Division day two report

Berkshire seamer Josh Lincoln took his first five wicket haul for the county to help restrict Devon to 270 for nine at Wargrave on the second day of the opening round of NCCA Championship matches.

Half-centuries from Rhys Lewis (86) and Charlie Dunnett (62) – who shared a second wicket partnership of 99 – took Berkshire to 243 for six at the close with 24 more of their first innings 90 overs still at their disposal.

Hayden Rossouw impressed with bat and ball to put Oxfordshire in control against Cornwall in the other Western Division One match at Banbury.

First Rossouw made 65 to help Oxfordshire to 302 in their first innings, then he opened the bowling and took two wickets as Cornwall slipped to 32 for four. Alfie MacDonald led a partial recovery with a half-century but Oxfordshire still limped to 121 for seven in reply.

Shropshire seamer George McCormick took five wickets on debut to leave Cheshire reeling at Whitchurch in Western Division Two.

McCormick should be familiar to Cheshire batters as he plays his club cricket for Chester Boughton Hall but he cut through their top order to end a rain-shortened day with five for 26.

Cheshire lost four wickets for one run in eight balls at one stage and ended the day on 110 for seven, 202 in arrears.

Shropshire’s 312 for nine was based on solid contributions down the order with Arminder Brar and Harry Chandler making half centuries and sharing a third wicket stand of 120. Debutant Oliver Parton then weighed in with 47 and Joe Stanley and Ben Roberts helped to push Shropshire past 300 in an entertaining eighth wicket partnership of 60.

Wales NC seamer Richard Edwards returned his Championship-best figures against Wiltshire at the South Wilts club in Salisbury but they went unrewarded.

A ninth wicket partnership of 122 – a Wiltshire record for the wicket against Wales - between Will Brown (84) and Ben Higton (34) helped them recover from 157 for eight to 281 all out. Seamer Chris Aubrey than took five for 34 – his first five wicket haul in the Championship – to dismiss Wales for 206.

Seven batters reached double figures but no-one bettered captain Cameron Herring’s 31 as Wiltshire secured a healthy first innings advantage.
