COUNTIES CRICKET Devon caught in Somerset spin

Devon missed an opportunity to collect the scalp of first-class neighbours Somerset in their Showcase Match in front of a large crowd at Exmouth.

Having dismissed Somerset for 204 in 44 overs, Devon appeared to pacing their chase to perfection when they reached the halfway stage of their on 104 for five with captain James Horler going well.

But Devon were then tied down by Somerset spinners Andy Umeed, Josh Thomas and Lewis Goldsworthy and lost their last five wickets for 27 in eight overs and were beaten by 72 runs.

Horler played the innings of the day, 47 from 78 balls, before he was seventh out, LBW Thomas who played for Devon last season, and the end came quickly with Devon being dismissed with more than 16 of their 50 overs unused.

“It was a game we could and should have won as 205 was gettable,” said Horler.

“We played well for 60 per cent of the game, but needed some twenties and thirties in the middle order and we just didn’t get them.”

Instead of becoming the fourth National Counties side to defeat a first-class county in this season’s Showcase Matches – following Cheshire, Lincolnshire and Buckinghamshire – Devon were left to reflect on what might have been.

They will take encouragement from an excellent team bowling performance that ensured that Somerset would have to work hard to avoid defeat.

There were two wickets apiece for Will Christophers, Ben Privett and Max Shepherd with Somerset captain Sean Dickson top-scoring with 39.
