Exmouth RFC head into today’s crucial National League 3 South West home game against Oxford Harlequins knowing that victory will give them an opportunity to play in National Two next season (1430ko).
Recent wins over Newton Abbot, Bracknell, Hornets, Old Patesians and Old Redcliffians means the Cockles are set to secure an end of season play-off spot with two games remaining.
Player coach Stuart Lowe, conditioning coach Ali Hill and Royal Navy Utility back Richard Cadywould are all pushing for a 1st XV recall, having missed out on last week’s 33-18 win at Old Reds. Former captains Ross Morshead and Garry Hooper will be hoping for a recall into the starting line-up having made a huge impact off the bench last weekend.
Cockles head coach Jon Hill said: "This game is huge for us, and one that we have trained exceptionally hard for. Alex Brown came down from the Exeter Chiefs on Tuesday night and literally drilled the forwards in a gruelling scrum session. We are all well aware what a victory will mean, while also recognising that Oxford will be hugely motivated as they could actually be relegated if results do not go their way.
"We are carrying a few knocks from last weekend, so at this stage have named a 22-man squad to plan for every eventuality, and are boosted by the return of Richard Cadywould and Stuart Lowe.
"We have a lot of competition for places at the moment, especially in the back row and in the centre, and the boys are working really hard in training to ensure that we achieve our season’s goals. Those goals are now staring us in the face, are absolutely realistic and we now feel are achievable. We are all very aware that the hard work now begins, and loads of players are going over and above the call of duty to force their way into the squad. This characterises the strong team and club ethic that we have at Exmouth RFC."
