The Rugby Football Union for Women South West under 15 side play their London & South East counterparts at Newbury on Sunday (1400).
In line with this seasons RFUW initiative, this will be the first time ever that a girls South West U15 team has taken the field following the decision to come into line with the men’s game and cut the eight women’s divisions down to four.
Coached by top former England Women’s international Jo Yapp, assisted by Christopher Hobbs, the squad, while not having played together before, have already got together for a four hour training session.
Team manager Denise Hodge says: “They have worked hard and bonded well, so there are a lot of positives.”
There are also important differences at U15 level to the senior game as flankers are not included, so each team has 13 players, and there are no line-outs. Matches are played for 50 minutes, 25 each way.
The South West team will be back in action on April 16-17 for the Under 15 Divisional Festival at Hartpury College, Gloucestershire.
