HOCKEY WALES 2022 Commonwealth Games squads

Hockey wales redHockey Wales is thrilled to announce the 38 athletes chosen to represent Wales at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games this summer.

The 18-player men and women’s squads include an exciting mix of experienced players and upcoming stars, including Olympic medallists, Gold-Coast and Glasgow Commonwealth athletes, 12 debutants, and three uncapped players.

Olympic bronze-medallist Leah Wilkinson will captain the women’s side alongside Beth Bingham and Sian French. Leading the men in Birmingham is the most capped Welsh male athlete, Lewis Prosser, with Luke Hawker and GB athlete Rupert Shipperley.

Tokyo 2020 and current GB squad members Jacob Draper and Sarah Jones will both compete at the Games, making this Jones’ third time representing Team Wales.

After impressing at the Women’s Junior World Cup in South Africa, Rebecca Daniel has been called up to the women’s team, while Gareth Griffiths and Holly Munro have also been selected in their respective senior squads for the first time.

Hockey Wales Director of Performance Kevin Johnson said: “The selection of the squads marks the start of the final preparation phase ahead of joining the rest of Team Wales for what promises to be a spectacular event in Birmingham. Selection across both genders has been incredibly competitive, which is a sign of how strong our international teams currently are. We aim to build on recent successes and try to deliver our best finish at a Commonwealth Games.”

As Head Coach of the Women, Kevin Johnson also said: “This squad selection ultimately reflects how we want to play the game and what we need to have about us to face the challenges that await in Birmingham. I’ve been impressed over the last year with the way the wider squad has pushed themselves as a group. While this will only make us stronger in the future, it has made this selection tough.”

“Congratulations to Rebecca Daniel who makes her first senior tournament selection. Coming off the back of the Junior World Cup in April, Daniel alongside fellow young players Millie Holme and Izzie Howell, will be able to bring this experience into the Games. Holly Munro is also in line to get her first cap after being in our programme for several months.”

“At the other end of the spectrum, we have the experience of eight players who are near to or beyond the 100 caps mark for Wales. It is an encouraging blend of potential and experience as the team prepares for the exciting opportunity to play on the world stage once again.”

Ria Burrage-Male, CEO of Hockey Wales said: “The Commonwealth Games is a magnificent, multi-sport event and the highest accolade for a sports person representing Wales. I would like to congratulate all players, coaches and support staff for their dedication and commitment, and wish those selected all the very best for what looks to be a truly amazing Games.”

Wales men play Canada in their first match of the Games on Saturday 30th July. Wales women also start off against Canada on Friday 29th July.

There will be a home nations clash in the men’s and women’s competition when Wales men take on England on Sunday 31st July, and Wales women face the host nation on Thursday 4th August.
