Today is England Hockey League Men’s Conference West’s version of super Sunday – with promotion and relegation issues still in the balance.
Thoughts that Cardiff & Met would claim their third title in a row have been put on hold by a 2-2 draw at home to relegation haunted Indian Gymkhana while Team Bath Buccs bounced back from their recent poor form to beat University of Birmingham 2-1.
Now in the 18th and final round the two top sides are level on 44 points with everything to play for on the last day of the regular season.
Buccs visit relegated basement side Whitchurch while leaders Cardiff – who have a far superior goal difference – visit sixth placed Cheltenham, assured of their national league status next season whatever happens today.
It promises to provide a thrilling finale to the season, especially as the final relegation play-off spot has still to be confirmed.
Barford Tigers start the day in ninth place on 15 points and with the toughest of last day fixtures, a derby against third placed University of Birmingham.
Eighth placed Indian Gym on 16 points were beaten 3-2 by University of Exeter last time out at home. Today they host fourth placed Fareham.
University of Exeter have soared to seventh, with 17 points, following back to back wins.
The greens followed up their crucial victory at Indian Gym with a 4-0 home win over Whitchurch last Sunday.
Today the students visit fifth placed Guildford knowing a win would secure their national league place for another term but any other result may result in them slipping to ninth and having to go through the rigours of an end of season relegation play-off.
It promises to be a memorable Sunday if not a super one for all concerned.
