BIG WINS FOR UoE, BUCCS AND BRANDS

england hockey league logoUniversity of Exeter claimed their best England Hockey League top flight win by beating second placed Cannock 4-3 in the Men’s Premier Division.

The relegation haunted greens rallied from a 7-1 Saturday defeat at top of the table East Grinstead to stifle Cannock’s title ambitions.

To put Saturday’s defeat into context, title favourites East Grinstead won 8-1 at fifth placed Reading yesterday, when University of Exeter gave their hopes of staying in the EHL top flight a huge boost.

With three games remaining – all at home - the Exeter students are now level on 10 points with second from bottom Bowdon.

Next Sunday the greens host eighth placed Southgate at the University Sports Park (1230) seeking to replicate the form that enabled them to defy the odds and beat Cannock with goals by Brendon Noble (18pc), Tom Carson (28pc) Robert Mugridge (37pc) and Josh Godfrey (53).

Unlucky 13? Team Bath Buccaneers clinched the EHL Men’s Conference West title and a promotion play-off spot following their 13th successive win, 3-0 at home to Fareham.

Phillip Ball (30ps), Tim Davenport (31pc) and David Devey (37) scored for Buccs.

Seventh placed Whitchurch beat basement side Bournville 3-2 with goals by Ben Croxall (12) John Collis (16pc) and Adam Barker (52) to move three points clear of eighth placed Cheltenham, beaten 4-0 by third placed University of Birmingham.

Fifth placed Cardiff & UWIC lost 1-0 at second from bottom Lichfield, who are now a point behind Cheltenham with three games remaining.

Davis Wood Hockey League leaders Firebrands clinched a promotion return to the EHL following a 3-1 home win over Isca at Failand and goals for Danny Nicoll, Oli Pomphrey and Tom Atkinson.

Brands 16th win takes them 12 points clear of promotion rivals Robinsons – in third place - with three games remaining.
