Today Somerset pit their wits against Devon (0915 & 1400) in the second round of the week-long Match Play Shield contest.

Adam Bridgewater’s Devon were pipped 7 ½-6 ½ by championship hosts Wiltshire on the opening day while Mike Darby's Gloucestershire beat Cornwall 9-5.

Steve Rickard’s Cornwall face hosts Wiltshire today (0815 & 1300) while Gloucestershire meet Dorset (1015 & 1500).

Wiltshire swept all before them to top the championship week leaderboard at Saunton a year ago and then went on to claim the national county crown at Ganton in north Yorkshire last September.

On their home course – Cumberwell Park golf complex is situated at Bradford-on-Avon – Wiltshire will be anxious to begin their national title defence by repeating their Saunton sweep.

Qualifying for this year’s English County Finals takes place during tomorrow’s 36 holes stroke play competition, which also sees the cream of the region’s top players vie for the South Western Counties individual amateur championship title.

Last summer Wiltshire qualified for the English County Finals with 901 to finish 20 strokes ahead of joint runners-up Cornwall and Gloucestershire. Somerset scored 922 while Devon totalled a disappointing 933 on home soil to finish a shot ahead of Dorset.

Qualifying for the English finals was only a part of Wiltshire’s success as they won four of the five match play rounds, to claim the Shield while Rushmore’s Ben Stow – a key member of their team – pipped Truro’s Rhys Enoch to the individual South West amateur title.

Cumberwell Park golf complex boasts four nine hole courses to enable different 18 hole combinations.

• The ladies’ amateur South West Inter-Counties match week tees off today at Trevose Golf & Country Club.

The winners of the week-long event in north Cornwall will represent the region at the women’s English County Finals, which are being staged at East Devon Golf Club from September 17-21 later this year.

• The 2012 men’s English County Finals are fixtured for Beau Desert Golf Club, Cannock, Staffordshire from September 28-31.
